Article: What is Cradle Cap?

Cradle cap is charecterised by greasy, yellow, scaly patches on the skin of the scalp and underneath the hair. It can also appear around eyebrows and behind ears. The condition is temporary and harmless and not due to infection, allergy or inadequate washing. Mild cases of cradle cap look similar to dandruff.

Cradle cap is very common in babies. It usually appears during the first couple of weeks of the infant's life. This type of dermatitis tends to occur in areas of skin which have a lot of sebaceous or oil glands, such as eyebrows, eyelids, nose and behind the ears.

The reason babies get cradle cap is simply due to our skin cells growing faster that they fall off. The greasy substance from sebaceous and oil glands keeps the old skin cells attached to the scalp as it dries.
