At Green People, we are very strict about what goes into our organic baby and children’s products. This is because we understand the impact which some commonly-used ingredients can have on some sensitive little ones and how organic, chemical-free products offer a highly-effective natural alternative.
Because we care about the ingredients in our products, and we know how much difference they can make to those with sensitivities, we give full disclosure of what goes into every product. You can find this information online on the ‘ingredients’ section of each product page and on the packaging of each product itself.
Ingredients we DO use
We mostly use plant extracts, essential oils, infusions and other plant-derived ingredients in our products. Each has a different part to play; some are active ingredients, some are natural preservatives, whilst others are foaming agents or PH regulators.
We also use beeswax in a number of our organic baby products, such as Baby Salve and Soothe & Calm Baby Balm. This is because it locks in – and locks out – water brilliantly, acting as both a moisturiser and a moisture barrier (handy for nappy creams!) It is also an emulsifier, helping different liquids to mix.
Whilst beeswax does make these products unsuitable for vegans, we clearly mark each non-vegan product so that you can see whether it is appropriate for you to use.
We do use:
100% plant-based emulsifiers, natural foaming agents, certified organic plant oils, organic floral waters, organic essential oils and natural minerals. We use gentle natural preservatives backed up, in a few products, with tiny amounts of synthetic preservatives to guarantee safe products free from bacteria and mould growth.
Organic Babies & Organic Children: Value for money
Many mainstream cosmetic brands contain a large proportion of non-active ingredients in the form of water (often 70% or more) and synthetic ingredients used to create improved textures, skin feel, fragrance and preservation as cheaply as possible.
Our natural skin care products for babies and children contain over 90% active organic ingredients – compared to ‘high street’ products which normally have an active ingredient level (non-organic) of below 6%.
As you can see from the diagram below, Organic Babies and Organic Children’s products offer excellent value for money. They are effective and concentrated so only a small amount is needed. In the case of the shampoos and body washes this means they can last as much as three times longer than high street brands.
Ingredients we DON’T use
We have a long list of ingredients which we feel should not be used in skin care products and which will never appear in any Organic Babies or Organic Children’s product.
At the top of that list is Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), a commonly-used foaming agent which you will find in most big brand shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps and even toothpastes. Unfortunately it can also be a skin irritant and can lead to dryness and itchiness in some people. We feel that SLS is best avoided, especially for babies and children.
We also do not use artificial fragrances in our Organic Babies and Organic Children’s products. Commonly known as ‘parfum’, artificial fragrances can be made up of many different compounds and are a common cause of reaction to skin care products. Instead, we scent our products with organic essential oils which are much less likely to cause reactions as they are natural. For those with ultra-sensitive skin or who prefer fragrance-free, we also have some products – such as the No Scent Baby Lotion or the No Scent Sun Lotion SPF25 – which have no essential oils or fragrance.
We do not use:
Sodium lauryl/laureth sulphate, Parabens, Lanolin, Propylene glycol, synthetic fragrances, colourants, petrochemicals, Ethyl alcohol, PABA-sunscreen, Urea, PEGs, DEA, TEA, irritating emulsifiers or harsh foaming agents.
