As discussed in the previous section, babies tend to really enjoy gnawing on objects during the teething process. This habit can be handily turned into an advantage by giving the baby things to suck on which will help to ease their discomfort.

If the baby is over 6 months, they may well like chewing on chilled – but soft – food stuffs like carrot sticks and celery. These will help to numb painful gums, as well as fulfilling their urge to chew. However, make sure that you don’t give them anything that is too hard, otherwise it may bruise their gums, and ensure that they are supervised.

Babies can also find relief from painful gums in other chilled foods, such as yoghurt and apple puree, or chilled drinks. However, you should try to avoid sugary foods wherever possible, as these can lead to early damage to the teeth.

As an alternative to food, teething rings can also provide a good focus for the teething baby. Some types can be chilled in the fridge, making them particularly soothing for sore gums.

However, one of the simplest natural ways to reduce the discomfort of teething is rubbing the baby’s gums gently with your finger. You may wish to use a little of our Organic Children’s Mandarin Toothpaste whilst you do this, as it is very gentle and babies tend to enjoy the taste of it.
